Chuck Berry was the original rock and roll showman — brash, combative, and utterly self-assured, crowing his guitar licks and clever lyrics before anyone else had staked that territory. He was famously territorial about his music, his money, and his legacy, demanding cash upfront at every show and tolerating no challenges to his throne. Like a rooster, he ruled his patch loudly and on his own terms, expecting the world to acknowledge his primacy — and for the most part, it did.
