H.P. Lovecraft was the archetypal introverted outsider — deeply withdrawn, intensely meticulous about his craft, and profoundly misunderstood during his lifetime. He lived in near-isolation in Providence, Rhode Island, pouring his anxieties and imagination into obsessively detailed cosmic horror fiction that he rarely promoted and which brought him little financial reward. Like the snake, he kept a low profile, recoiled from the public world, and channeled a dark, vicious creative vision into a body of work that would only be fully recognized after his death.
