Standing defiantly in his now-iconic photograph — armed, robed in African garb, seated on a wicker throne — Huey Newton embodied the gorilla's unmistakable blend of commanding authority and protective ferocity. As co-founder of the Black Panther Party, he built an entire community defense organization around the gorilla's core instincts: patrol the territory, shield the vulnerable, and confront threats head-on, as demonstrated through the Party's armed patrols of Oakland neighborhoods monitoring police brutality. His declaration that "the first lesson a revolutionary must learn is that he is a doomed man" reflects the gorilla's willingness to absorb enormous personal cost in defense of the group.
