Ioannis Kapodistrias

Eagle

Visionary statesman who soared above chaos to forge a nation.

Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first Governor of independent Greece and former Russian Foreign Minister, embodied the eagle's commanding vision and solitary authority — he saw the grand geopolitical picture while others were mired in factional squabbling. He held himself to the highest standards of statecraft, navigating the Congress of Vienna with cool independence and then attempting to build a modern Greek state almost entirely through sheer force of will. Like the eagle, he operated at a level above his peers, was deeply respected yet isolated at the top, and ultimately paid for that solitary authority with his life in 1831.
