A visionary leader who soared above compromise and paid dearly.

Jefferson Davis embodied the eagle's commanding, visionary, and fiercely independent nature — as President of the Confederate States, he held himself and others to an uncompromising standard, often isolating himself at the top through rigid pride and an unwillingness to delegate. His military background, authoritarian bearing, and insistence on seeing the 'big picture' of Southern sovereignty defined his leadership, even as it cost him vital alliances. Like the eagle, he was solitary, deeply self-assured, and ultimately tragic in his refusal to bend.
