Haydn was one of history's most industrious and methodical composers, producing over 100 symphonies, 68 string quartets, and dozens of operas and oratorios with relentless discipline during his decades of service at the Esterházy court. He took enormous pride in perfecting his craft, essentially engineering the classical symphony and string quartet forms through painstaking iteration and hard work rather than romantic inspiration.
