Keith Whitley possessed a rare, heartbreaking vocal elegance — his delivery of songs like 'Don't Close Your Eyes' and 'When You Say Nothing at All' carried a raw emotional vulnerability that was almost too beautiful to bear. Despite his extraordinary gift, he was deeply anxious and emotionally high-strung, battling severe alcoholism that reflected an inner fragility he could never outrun. Like a deer, he was graceful and striking on the surface but internally scattered and easily overwhelmed, ultimately consumed by the very sensitivity that made him so extraordinary.
