Wittgenstein was a profoundly introverted intellectual who shunned social convention and celebrity, giving away his inheritance and retreating to remote Norway or a simple cottage to pursue philosophical work in near-total isolation. His two radically different philosophical systems — the Tractatus and the Philosophical Investigations — were produced through ferocious, behind-the-scenes mental labor, and he often discouraged students from pursuing academic philosophy, steering them toward more 'real' work. Like the mole, he burrowed deep into the underground of ideas, rarely surfacing for applause, yet his quiet excavations permanently transformed the landscape of Western thought.
