Mark E. Smith, the singular frontman of The Fall for over four decades, was the definition of fiercely solitary creativity — he churned through over 60 band members while remaining the unmovable, untameable constant, refusing to conform to any industry expectation. His interviews were notoriously unpredictable and guarded, his aesthetic relentlessly idiosyncratic, and he showed deep contempt for anyone who tried to categorise or co-opt his work. Like a wild-cat, he was comfort-seeking in his obsessive dedication to his own vision, yet explosive and aloof toward the outside world, operating entirely by rules he wrote himself.
