Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was a towering, singular figure who transcended cultural, religious, and musical boundaries, commanding reverence not through showmanship but through an almost supernatural artistic authority. He operated largely on his own terms, transforming the ancient Sufi devotional form of qawwali into a global phenomenon through sheer visionary mastery, earning the title 'Shahenshah-e-Qawwali' — King of Kings of Qawwali. Like the eagle, he soared above the fray, deeply independent and self-possessed, setting standards so high that he remains unrivalled decades after his death in 1997.
