Titus Oates was the 17th-century English conspiracist who fabricated the 'Popish Plot' of 1678, falsely claiming Catholics were scheming to assassinate King Charles II — sending dozens of innocent people to their deaths. He operated entirely through deception, self-interest, and political opportunism, shifting allegiances and spinning elaborate falsehoods to accumulate power and protection. When his lies were eventually exposed, he was convicted of perjury and severely punished — a textbook weasel who worked every angle until the scheme finally collapsed.
