Guillermo del Toro is a deeply intellectual and observant filmmaker whose creative process is defined by meticulous research, encyclopedic knowledge of mythology, folklore, and horror, and a near-scholarly devotion to his craft — hallmarks of the owl. He famously keeps detailed journals ('bleak books') filled with sketches and ideas, watches and rewatches films obsessively, and thinks profoundly before committing to a project.
