Margaret Mead spent decades traveling to remote corners of the globe — Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Bali — living among peoples radically different from her own, driven by an insatiable need to explore and understand human culture on her own terms. She was fiercely self-reliant and unconventional, rejecting domestic conformity and charting an entirely independent intellectual path at a time when few women did. Like the albatross, she was most herself when far from home, returning periodically to share her hard-won wisdom before setting off again into the unknown.
