Michel Foucault spent his life watching power structures that others took for granted — prisons, asylums, sexuality, discourse — and dissecting them with surgical analytical precision. He was deeply private, famously difficult to pin down personally, and preferred to observe and theorize from a remove rather than perform or seek celebrity. His entire intellectual project was about seeing what was invisible to others, the defining trait of the owl.
